We talked about a lot of different things this week, but the one thing that I think we focused the most on and which I learned the most about was analyzing poetry. In the past I either really liked poetry or I absolutely despised it. And I'll admit "The Eagle" was not one of my favorites. When I first read it I wasn't surprised at what it was about just because the title was so blunt. The poem itself used lots of literary elements like alliteration and rhyme. So I filled out the TP-CASTT without a great deal of effort. I didn't really look at it in a different way until the next day in class where we talked about it with our table group.
While not all poems will have a deeper meaning, most of them do and its the readers job to think out of the box and figure out what the author is really trying to say. And I became very aware of that fact this last week. On the surface "The Eagle" is a simple poem but when you look deeper you can discover a whole other side and find a different meaning.
One other thing that I learned is that by constantly reading and writing and practicing these skills improvement is inevitable. I struggled to write this weeks PoW, but hopefully next week I will find it a little easier and by the end of the year have no problem writing them.
